I wholeheartedly believe that all children should have people in their lives that empower and inspire them. Growing up I was so fortunate to have incredibly supportive and impactful role models in my life and I believe that Charleston Hope inspires that same support by allowing students to receive unwavering encouragement, by providing access to mental health services, and by inspiring people in the community who leave a positive impact that will never be forgotten!

When I was 10 years old, my dad took me to a woman's basketball game, not realizing the impact it would have on me. Mere minutes after the tip-off, I knew I wanted to be exactly like the girls I saw on the court. I learned that one of the players was offered an athletic scholarship to play in college. It was in that same moment I realized exactly what I wanted to do and who I wanted to grow up to be — I wanted to play college basketball, just like her. This spontaneous woman’s basketball game decided the trajectory of my entire future —receiving a scholarship, playing college basketball, getting my education, having the career of my dreams, and so much more! I have often thought about how blessed I am to have seen a woman accomplish such an achievement I didn't even know was possible and how every child deserves to have an experience like that. Last year I witnessed my friend and colleague, Dani Monroe, teach local students the basics of kickboxing through Charleston Hope. After seeing the positive reactions from the students, all I could think about was how many of them would go home and tell their parents that they wanted to learn kickboxing, just like Dani.

Students in Title 1 schools deserve access to essential mental health & behavioral health resources; they need empowerment to thrive in their communities and beyond. Every child deserves the chance to make their dreams a reality! This is why I have chosen to be a Charleston Hope Hero. Join me in supporting the Charleston Hope Heroes Fundraiser!
